PicoSure Melasma Treatment

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes patches of darkened pigment — made of melanin — to appear on areas of skin that get regular sun exposure. These patches of skin appear brown to grey-brown in color and typically show up on your forehead, cheeks, chin, the bridge of your nose, and above your upper lip.

Sun protection is the best way to avoid melasma and daily sunscreen use is recommended. In some cases, hormones can trigger melasma in pregnant women. While melasma is generally not dangerous, it can change your appearance and ruin your self-confidence.

How does PicoSure® treat melasma?

With the PicoSure laser system, Dr. Roger Brill treats darkened patches of melasma, so you can have brighter, lighter skin like you used to. PicoSure emits high and low intensity energy that is focused on the treatment area to break down dark melanin pigments in the skin.

The high intensity energy of the PicoSure also stimulates an immune response to heal skin cells and produce new collagen and elastin, which tighten and brighten your skin. By removing the darkened pigment, PicoSure gives you a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance.

What are the benefits of PicoSure for melasma?

Compared to other treatments for melasma, PicoSure provides a fast and convenient solution to remove darkened pigment from your skin. Most PicoSure sessions last only 10-15 minutes without recovery downtime, so you can immediately resume your normal routine afterward.

PicoSure also acts more quickly than at-home creams and can even remove pigment from darker skin types that typically don’t respond to other non-surgical alternatives like chemical peels.

What can I expect after a PicoSure treatment?

After a session, you may notice mild redness and swelling at the treatment site for one to three hours. Since PicoSure doesn’t damage the surface of your skin, you can apply cosmetics, moisturizers, and sunscreen immediately after treatment.

Once your treatment is completed, you can return to your normal activities without the need for recovery downtime. Since PicoSure doesn’t injure the skin, you won’t experience any scarring or discomfort once the procedure is over.

Depending on the condition of your skin, you may need a series of visits to remove the darkened pigment completely.
